Changes to Eligibility
Starting January 21, 2025, at 5:00 UTC, the eligibility criteria for open work permits for family members of workers will be updated.
If you apply before January 21, 2025:
- Your application will be processed under the current eligibility criteria.
- All applications submitted before this date will still be reviewed.
- If you already have an approved open work permit that hasn’t expired, it remains valid.
Your family member’s eligibility is determined by:
- The type of work you are doing in Canada.
- Whether you’re on a pathway or have already applied for permanent residence.
If your family member isn’t eligible for an open work permit, they may qualify for another type of work permit. Alternatively, they could consider applying to visit or study in Canada.
